On Friday, June 2nd, 5th grade band members from Veterans Park School attended the annual Music in the Parks adjudicated music festival and competition at Six Flags New England where they were not only awarded a 1st place trophy with an excellent rating in their division, but also received the trophy for best overall elementary school performance.

According to Nicole Sousa, Veterans Park Band Director, this festival attracts schools from all over New England and provides a year end assessment from an outside panel of experienced music educators in the field. “Judges offer suggestions for improvement, as well as praise for all of the skills students have learned and mastered during the year,” explained Sousa.

The first stop on their way to the top award was Westfield State University to perform a concert which included Heroes and Glory by James Swearingen, Midnight Madness by Brian Balmages and Inception by Joseph Compello.

This performance was followed by a fun day at Six Flags New England where students celebrated all of their hard work. They also attended the awards ceremony in the picnic grove area at 5pm to receive their award winning trophies.

Sousa noted that students in the current 5th grade band program have only been playing their instrument for two years, adding, “I am so proud!  What an amazing accomplishment for these students. The judges not only commented on how well prepared the students were for their performance, but also how well behaved and polite they were.”

“The excellent rating is a difficult score to earn,” added Sousa.  “In the three years we have been attending this festival, this is the first time our students earned the best overall elementary school performance trophy. They worked hard all year and deserve the recognition they earned today.”

When learning of their awards Veterans Park Principal, Melissa Knowles, stated, “I am so proud of the 5th grade band and Ms. Sousa for achieving this tremendous accomplishment. They represented with Vets Park  PRIDE! The competition results are a testament to all of their hard work and dedication and confirms what we always knew - they are the best of the best!”

CONGRATULATIONS!
