On March 28th three Ludlow Public School teachers were honored by the Sgt. Joshua D. Desforges VFW Post 3236 for their outstanding commitment to teach and promote Americanism, civic responsibility, flag etiquette, instilling national pride and patriotism in their classrooms. Those teachers honored this year were:  Mrs. Michele Manganaro-Thompson, Chapin Street School 3rd grade teacher (nominated by fellow 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Carrie Joseph) and Mrs. Erica Marsh and Mrs. Angela Knox, Veterans Park School 4th grade teachers (nominated by their student, Kassidy Chavez).

Director Eric Segundo, Veterans Services for the Town of Ludlow, explains that this local recognition “is part of the annual Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics for at least half of the school day in a classroom environment and promote America’s history, traditions and institutions effectively.” To learn more about this National Award click here.

When learning of the award Mrs. Marsh shared, “Mrs. Knox and I are very honored to have received this award. America wouldn't be the great nation it is today without our active military and veterans.”

Mrs. Knox added, “It's important for students to learn about the sacrifices made by those in the military, to keep us safe and free from harm.  We actually learned this first hand  when several veterans visit our classrooms to share some of their experiences as part of a veterans day celebration.”

“Mrs. Knox and Mrs. Marsh are committed to teaching the values of civic responsibility and Americanism each day within their classrooms,” stated Mrs. Melissa Knowles, Veterans Park Principal.  “They seamlessly incorporate the importance of being a caring, responsible and productive citizen into their lessons on a daily basis.  I couldn’t be prouder that they were honored with this award.”

“I was very surprised and extremely honored to have been nominated for the award,” explained Manganaro-Thompson. “Any issue that has to do with our service men and women is extremely close to my heart.  I feel that I have a great opportunity to share my respect for our veteran's and active military with my students through education and modeling.”

Mrs. Nikki Reed, Chapin Street Principal was not at all surprised when learning that Manganaro-Thompson was selected to receive this honor, “Michele’s dedication to support and teach students the importance of honoring our veterans is admirable.  In addition to bringing awareness of the sacrifices veterans make for all Americans, this year she helped to organize a fundraiser for Wreaths Across America; raising enough money to purchase ninety  wreaths for the Veterans Cemetery in Agawam.”

All three teachers were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from both the House of Representatives and the VFW and a check for $100.00. The awardees will now advance to the state level competition which is the next step towards the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.  Congratulations to all of these very deserving teachers.
