During this holiday season the Community Outreach Class at Veterans Park School sponsored the annual Toys for Tots Drive by asking students and families to donate new, unwrapped toys for children up to age 12. Toys for Tots is a non-profit charity directed by the U.S. Marines Corp. The program collects new, unwrapped toys every year, between October and December, to ensure children less fortunate receive a gift during the holiday season.
Mrs. Rosemary Jorge, Community Outreach Teacher, shared that in addition to the drive, this year Veterans Park School accepted The Letters to the Troops Challenge sponsored by LUSO Federal Credit Union. According to their website this is the 5th year LUSO has sponsored this challenge to support our military during the holiday season. The challenge stated,’for every 20 greeting cards created to brighten the day of those who are serving our country, LUSO will give back to our community by donating a new, unwrapped toy to its annual Toys for Tots drive, up to 100 new toys’.
Jorge reported that students made a total of 267 cards which added 13 additional toys (THANK YOU LUSO) to the total number of 154 toys collected this year at Vets Park. In addition, $40 in cash was also raised. Many thanks to LUSO for not only supporting the Toys for Tots Drive, and our military, but for being positive role models that all students can emulate.
Due to inclement weather, Santa’s ride was cancelled, but the toys were brought to the Ludlow Town Hall in time for Santa to take them away!
