The sunny blue sky, splattered with occasional fluffy white clouds, was the perfect backdrop for the enthusiasm and positive energy radiating from all of the Special Olympians on October 20th as they eagerly participated in the annual soccer event sponsored by Special Olympics/Massachusetts at Granby Jr./Sr. High School in Granby, MA.

Mrs. Jill Yarkey, Adaptive Physical Education Teacher for the Ludlow Public Schools, explained that students from Ludlow High School and Veteran Park School practiced their soccer skills during physical education class, with the goal of giving their very best effort during this special event.

LPS students arrived confident and eager to display their skills in each of the several stations that were set-up such as dribbling, keep-away, shooting on net for a goal, hula hoops, hand poppers, passing, etc.  “Our Ludlow students were very excited to participate in this event, and they were amazing. It was another great experience for Ludlow students at a Special Olympics event,” shared Yarkey, following the closing ceremony.

All participants were the proud recipients of the official Special Olympic gold medal, and there is no doubt that the Ludlow students will wear their medals with well deserved pride.  This pride is also felt by their teachers, Mr. Jonathan Mitchell and Mrs. Karly Orsi-Cordova, and support staff, who know first hand the determination and 100% effort these students display in their classrooms on a daily basis.
