Watch out Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer, there’s some new competition on the horizon at Veterans Park School!  Mrs. Melissa Knowles, Veterans Park Principal, was excited to share that this year 4th and 5th grade students will be producing and starring in their very own daily newscast-- WVTS Channel 45!

Knowles explained that the idea came to fruition after “discussions  regarding how to better engage students in the Vets Park community, utilizing technology beyond the classrooms and encouraging student creativity.  The newscasts will achieve all of those goals and at the same time  keep the staff and student body informed and up to date on what’s happening in the school.”

Mrs. Rosemary Jorge, Student Support Specialist and Community Outreach Teacher explained that the opportunity to be part of the broadcasts is open to all Vets Park students. Staff and students submit stories for consideration for the students to research, write the script and star in the newscast. The news crew has set up a mobile studio, complete with a green screen and an iPad to record and edit segments

Jorge explained that the WVTS45 newscasts will consist of segments that showcase classroom highlights, upcoming school wide events/initiatives and spotlight various student and staff accomplishments.  The daily broadcast will air in classrooms at the start of school during morning meeting. The newscasts can also be viewed by tuning in to the Veterans Park Youtube Channel.

Fifth graders Diogo Dos Santos and Malina Dinis starred in the premier broadcast on October 7, 2016; receiving rave reviews from both the student body and staff. Knowles explained that “students apply, and interview through an on screen audition, for the position of news anchors. This is one of several school jobs through the community outreach class.”

Oh, and in case you were wondering what WVTS45 represents, Knowles shared, “VTS is VETS without the E and the number 45 stands for grades 4 and 5.”
