On Friday, September 23rd The Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley sponsored an author visit at Veterans Park School. Mr. Zachary Richer, Veterans Park Librarian, explained that two very talented authors, Mrs. Tania Unsworth and Mr. Adam Shaughnessy visited the school, speaking to students about their latest books for middle grade readers.

The authors are touring together as part of the  iLoveMG campaign; an initiative to encourage and promote the value of middle grade readers.  This campaign targets those students who fall into that range beyond picture books, but before young adult literature.

Unsworth engaged students with her crisp, clear English accent, and gave a brief account of Brightwood, a creepy thriller that left students intrigued, when she left them with a thrilling cliffhanger.

Shaughnessy shared the “maybe true, maybe false” story of where found the  inspiration for his Unbelievable Fib series.  He also drew on his experience as an elementary educator to connect with the audience.

Students learned that both authors have Massachusetts connections: Shaughnessy having grown up near Boston, and Unsworth currently residing in Boston.

Of their visit, Mrs. Melissa Knowles, Veterans Park Principal, commented, “Both authors were engaging and informative.  The presentations not only spoke about the writing process, but also weaved in the importance of having fun, using your imagination and following your dreams.”
