FUNd Run History
One of the important components of the PRIDE mission at Veterans Park School is to promote, develop and practice community and social awareness. Click here to view a video that exemplifies this mission at Vets Park. As part of this awareness, student members of the Veterans Park Lion’s Den approached Principal Knowles in May 2014 with an idea for an annual event that would raise funds to support a local family in need, or cause. They envisioned a FUNd Run where together students and staff would raise money by running and/or walking laps, in the name of the chosen cause. Each participant would be responsible for procuring sponsors and/or donations for the event, with volunteers counting the total number of laps completed by each participant. Their vision was for the event to end with all staff and students walking the final lap together, as one Vets Park family. When Mrs. Knowles learned of this idea she immediately gave it two thumbs up, elicited the help of Mrs. Nikki Reed, Student Support Supervisor, and the two of them got right to work planning the event with the Lion’s Den students. One of the first things on their agenda was to meet with Luso Credit Union to establish a unique account for the proceeds from the yearly event. With the bank account established and the Lion's Den students eager to bring their idea to life, the first annual FUNd Run came to fruition in June 2014.
2016 FUNd Run Event, April 11th: Wheels4Jaime
Principal Knowles is proud to announce that the final amount raised for this year's FUNd Run was just over $8,500. The check was presented to Jaime and his family following the final lap of the 2016 FUNd Run- Wheels4Jaime, that was held this year at the Ludlow High School Athletic Fields, on April 11th.
The money raised will be used to purchase a specialized SUV, with a lift, that will accommodate Jaime's wheelchair and help his family provide him with the mobility needed when attending medical appointments, family functions, and enjoying life. 2015 FUNd Run Event, June 5th: TRULY BRAVE
This year, the FUNd Run was held in honor of Xavier Pereira, and Anthony Camerota. These two young boys are currently in treatment for Childhood Cancer. The decision to honor Xavier and Anthony came about because both of these boys have ties to Ludlow and Vets Park. Xavier has relatives who are students here at Vets and Anthony has friends here at Vets and an aunt who used to teach here in Ludlow. The event was held on Friday, June 5th, at Veterans Park School.
2014 FUNd Run Event: ACTION FOR AVERY
This first year, the FUNd Run was held to honor Avery McAvoy, who is a beautiful one year old girl recently diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. Click here to learn more about Neuroblastoma. The decision to honor Avery came about because her father Kevin has worked for the Ludlow Public Schools for the last five years and currently assists with the Veterans Park 5th grade band classes. In addition, Mr. McAvoy is the Band Director at Ludlow High School.
Principal Knowles is proud to announce that the final amount raised for this year's FUNd Run was over $6,000. The check, along with the motorized mini Cadillac purchased for Avery and her older brother, was presented to the McAvoy Family during the final Vets Park monthly meeting held on June 20th. Below is a video that captures the spirit of giving and caring that was evident during this amazing event!
